Who doesn’t love exploring new places and showing it off on Instagram? That’s the magic about speakeasy bars. It has this mysterious story of a hidden location that one needs to unlock and some even need a “password” code just to enter. The term “speakeasy” goes back during the Prohibition-era from 1920 to the year of 1933.  At that time, it was illegal to sell and consume alcohol so people started serving alcohol to the public in an illicit establishment to keep the booze going. Since then, times have changed in terms of the law but to upkeep with the hidden bar concept, more speakeasy bars are coming to live in the Kuala Lumpur area. People are certainly itching to uncover some of the most creative bars around town. Here are some of our picks! 

1.Brixton 23 

The moment you enter into this sophisticated establishment, you’ll certainly see the inspiration behind this bar from the secret intelligence movie The Kingsman. First impressions are you’ll be looking at a high end suits tailor shop. It’s only when you walk to the tailor’s office through a hidden door and down a staircase like a true professional spy, is where really Brixton 23 resides. Lavish yourself with their fancy interior decor and scrumptious food. If you’re feeling the mood for a ‘shaken not stirred’ drink, get a load of their signature cocktail, The Kingsman and Eggsy. Wine options are also available.

2. P&C Cocktail Bar

Are you fascinated with Al Capone and newspaper clippings that date back ages ago to feel nostalgic? This place has got you covered. It can be a little difficult in finding the place but fret not, just look for Naughty Nuri’s and find a small looking hut with a wooden entrance. Do note that this is a small space so don’t be upset if you can’t find a seat. What’s interesting about this place is the fact that you won’t be served with a drink menu but rather they will give you an option of category choices from alcoholic drinks to the taste you want to mix into your cocktail. You just need to tick your pick and trust the experienced bartender to hook you up!

3. Circa Bar 

This newest speakeasy bar has been the talk of the town mainly due to its unique entrance. You need a specific code to enter in and the code differs every week. Not to worry as the code can be easily found on their Instagram page. Hidden along a back alley in the bustling Plaza Batai, Circa Bar is accessible through a ‘hole in the wall’ and up a spiral staircase. Besides that, this speakeasy bar is known for its unique cocktail concoction such as the Edison cocktail or the Yuan Dynasty. It’ll be an extra fun night for you if you love to groove to their R&B signature tunes and sometimes even special guest artists in attendance.

4. D by Dirty

Seeing how hidden this place is, makes the perfect spot for a quiet night in. Just look for LYE 110 bar and head up one floor higher and you’ll be greeted with a huge black and white graffiti of a skeleton with an owl on one shouler and a crow on the other. It looks like a slight homage to the grim reaper. D by Dirty is mainly known for its whisky bar and offers a range of good quality whiskey that is not to be missed especially their Famous Grouse. If you’re hungry, they also serve a variety of snacks from butterscotch sliders with bacon to sticky rice pork rendang.

The name itself you’ll be able to unlock the message of this Pandora’s place inspired by the blockbuster film, Avatar. Be sure to take a lot of pictures and videos as this place is a concept filled with neon lights and a world of fantasy. Sticking true to its speakeasy concept, there is no signages and no door but you’re in the right direction if you are standing in front of random letterboxes. It’s a combination of psychedelic and almost a fairy tale like a bar that will leave you constantly in awe. Part of their artwork in the bar is also filled with unique neon art of Marilyn Monroe.Be sure to try their signature cocktail of “JELLYFISH” and “Woodsprites”.

6. Skullduggery 

With a name like Skullduggery, you’ll be freaked out with the amount of skulls embroidered in gold all over the place but they place it in such a sophisticated setting decor with the vintage cushioned seats. It’s not as creepy as you think it is except the path to enter in as it is located at a back alley just right behind Huckleberry’s cafe. This place can get bit packed later on the day but be sure to secure your seats. One thing you can’t miss out here is the amazing cocktails they have. It’s one of the most sort after drinks here. Plus, dance along to some of the sickest beats through the night.

Lurk onto creepy and abandoned feels of shop lots in Chinatown KL and dark staircases to the most brightest neon lights and music to entice you throughout your visit. Open the first door and you’ll be wanting to spare some time for your Instagram with a virtual reality, and psychedelic views. When you’ve entered the bar itself, you’ll be bound to see neon sights like “Why so serious ah?” and what looked like a Spiderman signature hand gesture. Make sure you order their known cocktails there such as 1664+2 which will be served with a fire extinguisher, like literally! The mood to this whole place is lively and a great bar to spend with your close friends.

Also situated along the hustle and bustle of Chinatown’s city centre in Kuala Lumpur, lies PS150, a speakeasy bar that has earned a reputation for being an award winning bar and vintage oriental interior designs. The cocktail list and seating is divided into distinct eras in the history of this mixed beverage: Vintage, Prohibition, Tiki, Disco and Contemporary. This place offers a great bar hopping experience when you’re around KL and a truly Instagrammable place.  If you can’t find PS 150, just look for Merchant’s Lane cafe or a toy shop at the entrance.

9. Concubine KL 

Another attraction just 2 minutes walk from Chinatown’s dawns a new hangout spot called the Kwai Chai Hong. It’s a neglected now improved place that is perfect to fill your Instagram post and story feeds with. However, at night this place comes to live with their friendly and cozy Concubine Bar. The original structure is still there but painted on with beautiful and vibrant murals of Chinese influences. The food and drinks menu here also serve Pan-Asian small bites for when you’re sipping on their finest cocktails.

You don’t want to be pronouncing this hidden wine bar wrongly! Corks Out is situated in Taman Tun Dr Ismail where it’s easy to find and you can get purchased wines/meads/liquors and have a drink at the back where the bar is located. What is unique about this place is the fact that it’s wine is sold at retail price and they have an amazing team that helps you sort out your wine choices. Plus point is you even have food that is designed to pair with your wine preference. You’ll find unusual and rare wine selections here too.
