The One and Only Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Factory in Malaysia

If you’ve ran out of ideas on where to bring the kids during the weekend or the upcoming semester break, here’s one that will get them excited – a Chocolate Factory!

Benns Ethicoa Chocolate Factory is the only chocolate factory in Malaysia that allows visitors to experience the process of turning single-estate cacao into fine artisan chocolate. Located in Cheras, Benns Ethicoa (the name combines the words ‘ethics’ and ‘cocoa’) showcases the bean-to-bar process and demonstrates how Asia can join the ranks amongst South American countries in cocoa production. Benns’ business model focuses on benefiting the farmer. Farmers that Benns work with are paid 3 times more than market price and by doing so, it enables the farmers to develop and improve farming practices to produce better quality beans.

With knowledge of Benns Ethicoa’s noble cause, the perception of the visit changed. We were not just visiting a factory but to be a part of a socio-economical initiative that will benefit locals of each region.

ABOUT THE TOUR

The tour includes:

  • Bean-to-bar guided tour (Duration: 30-45 minutes)
  • A sample of house specialty drinking chocolate or cacao tea
  • A taste of selected chocolate pastry or bon bons

“WHERE DOES CHOCOLATE COME FROM?”

Whilst most of us whispered under our breath, ‘Supermarket’, we had our friendly guide to explain the untold truth. We had a chance to view a cocoa tree and hold a fresh cracked cacao pod. We also got the chance to taste the wet cocoa beans. You’ll be surprised that it tastes very similar to mangosteens! The tour also includes a history of chocolate and why Benns Ethicoa choose to strike off the middlemen and directly source cocoa from farmers in Sungai Ruan in Malaysia, Lampang in Thailand, Vung Tau in Vietnam, Calinan in Philippines and Anaimalai in India.

THE CHOCOLATE PROCESS

Did you know that only 3 ingredients are needed to make 72% Dark Chocolate? That’s what we found out!

With the factory completely visible, each section is separated by glass. There is a short description to explain each process. The best part of the tour is that you have the chance to sample chocolate at different stages of production. From refining to moulding, there are a total of 10 processes involved to produce smooth chocolate.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

At the end of the tour, we got to taste their house speciality drinking chocolate or cacao tea and selected chocolate pastry. We must admit that chocolate tastes better when you’ve seen how it has been made! If you’d like to bring home a souvenir or to present someone with a locally produced item, gift sets are readily available. The chocolate varieties come from different farms across the region. You’ll be pleasantly surprised of the distinct flavours of cocoa from different territories. Give it a try!
